This book began as a COVID project. Though I’ve been one of the area’s “go to” rail historians for several decades, I knew next to nothing about Burlington, Vermont’s public transportation system until 2020 when I began collecting words and images for what became Trolley Wires to Rubber Tires. All 16.2 miles of horse and street car lines are covered from their 1885 start to 1929 finale as the oldest operating car was burned in a “celebration” honoring the large fleet of shiny bus replacements. It was been rough riding ever since, though this small city has an impressive system for its size.
